Ok, (most of) you have been in this class for almost half the year. In your view, to what extent are our actions guided by society, and how much is truly free will?
Its hard to say because there is a good amount of kids that follow the crowd and some that do things by themselves but did they chose to be that way or did society make them chose that way because they they fit into a different category. I think most of our actions are dictated by society but there are still key decisions made using free will.
Almost all we do is based on society and how it works. The way we look, how we act, what we even like doing is based on society. There is very very little that is actually done on someones own free will. People choose what they study in college based on society as well, or even if they go to college. If someone grows up poor, then they are more likely to believe that there is no way for them to afford it. The music we listen to depends on where we live, and the people around us. If you are the only person to like a certain type of music then you will be more likely to change your opinion to match the pack. Clothing also depends on where you live and the people around you. The Chinese dress a whole lot different than Americans. Everything that you "choose" to do in life has most likely been done by someone else so guide lines are set. These guide lines have turned more into barriers. People tend not to go to far out side of them, and society keeps it that way. Peer pressure is a huge factor as well.
I think most of our actions are guided by society. People around us influence what we do everyday. Yes, we make our own choices but a lot of people hide information about themselves that is shameful to society. They don't want to be humiliated in front of their peers or coworkers. People become afraid that others will taunt or harass them for their choices. This makes people hide who they are. Many people just go with the flow so they don't have to worry about what people will say.
