Its a racist word. It shouldn't be used for anything and shouldn't be used bu anyone. Some black people say it when talking to each other and think its alright but if a white person says it it takes on a completely different meaning. It means the same either way. There are some people though that do not think of this word as racist but how can you not think it is. The word was used to describe an African American during the Slave and Segregation periods of the United States. The word was meant to be degrading and it still is. So to view this word as not racist you would have to be racist yourself or blind to the fact that it is a degrading term and the history that is involved with it.
